Summary:
The number of Malaysians who are obese or overweight is increasing.
Malaysia has the highest rates of obese and overweight individuals in the Asia Pacific region.
In 2015, the number of diabetes patients increased from 17.5% to 21% by year end.
"Metabolic surgery" can treat individuals with metabolic syndromes such as Type 2 diabetes.
Patients who undergo this surgery will have better control over their blood sugar with lesser diabetes medication needed.
This also leads to a healthier lifestyle.
Although diabetes is a chronic disease, this surgery offers a major improvement or complete disease remission for the individual as it shows great reduction in insulin usage.
However, the challenge in Malaysia is the prejudicial attitude towards this type of surgery. Lack of public awareness regarding this surgery is an obstacle.
