Summary:

  • The number of Malaysians who are obese or overweight is increasing.

  • Malaysia has the highest rates of obese and overweight individuals in the Asia Pacific region.

  • In 2015, the number of diabetes patients increased from 17.5% to 21% by year end.

  • "Metabolic surgery" can treat individuals with metabolic syndromes such as Type 2 diabetes.

  • Patients who undergo this surgery will have better control over their blood sugar with lesser diabetes medication needed.

  • This also leads to a healthier lifestyle.

  • Although diabetes is a chronic disease, this surgery offers a major improvement or complete disease remission for the individual as it shows great reduction in insulin usage.

  • However, the challenge in Malaysia is the prejudicial attitude towards this type of surgery. Lack of public awareness regarding this surgery is an obstacle.
